The CREWS'N HEALTHMOBILE
I was really dreading my community health clinicals this semester. I still doubt I will ever be a community health nurse, but I have learned a lot while working with this Phoenix Children's Hospital Youth Outreach program for the homeless. So far I have spent two 10-hour days with them. I have at least 20 more hours to go and a teaching project. I work at their main facility in the morning helping with clinic, then we take off in the sweet med van shown above to take care of the residents living in a homeless shelter. The van is truly a doctors office on wheels. I spend my day helping to take vital signs, filling prescriptions, drawing blood, collecting other various specimens :) and whatever else they need me to help with. At the facility, we see mostly teens, but at the shelter, we work mostly with the children of homeless families. I was the mean nurse the other day after I gave over a dozen immunizations on the med van. Dum dums really didn't seem to help the situation.
The main facility has all sorts of counselling, classes, breakfast/lunch, laundry services, showers and a meditation room. Staff are working on getting dental services in the med van soon. They are very excited because root canals and many other procedures will be easily done on wheels!
Pretty interesting.
